here comes the biggest election of this century. suddenly we have an incredible improvement in unemployment, something that takes the calendar back four years. you worked in the bls. you know how this works. can these numbers be manipulated? >> no, they really can't. it would be extremely hard to manipulate the numbers. absolutely impossible to manipulate and get away with. bls is comprised of career people who are dedicated to their work. nothing but career people there. a real strong sense of objectivity in what they do. would just be impossible to work these numbers. interpreting the numbers is a different issue. the unemployment rate really did go down, and it really was from the household survey. i can tell you, when i look at these reports the first in a look at is not the unemployment rate. it's the number of payroll jobs created. in line the last 67 months, and that survey is of very large survey. is surveying not only 400,000 businesses, its really looking at the employment records of 40 million people. so this is very accu

so this is the choice we face in the election, and this is what the election comes down to, and i know you must be tired of hearing ads, but you will hear moreover the next six weeks, and over and over again, you will hear my opponents talking about how bigger tax cuts and fewer regulations and that's the way to go, and since government can't do anything, it should do almost nothing. if you can't afford health care, then hope you don't get sick is their theory. if you can't afford college, borrow money from your parents. you know what? that's not who we are. i don't think government can solve all of our problems, but government is not the source of all of our problems, either. there's stuff we can do together. instead of blaming, immigrants, unions or gays or somebody for what is going on, what we need to do is pull together. we're all in this together. we believe that america only works when we all accept responsibility for ourselves and for our each other. that's how we create -- >> mr. obama will be on the road through wednesday's first presidential debate. mitt romney heads to colo

this is where american elections are fought, in the middle, the general election. what i don't understand is why he waited so long to do it. i don't why he didn't come out immediately after the republican primary, maybe even take on some of the tax loopholes, he says name a couple of them to prove he's going to stay on the side of the middle class. to find his entire life and now he's playing catch up. i'm not sure he has enough time. >> he's got a challenging -- pew survey found 75% of votes said it's more difficult now to maintain a standard of living and a "usa today" gallup poll before the debate said 53% think president obama will do better for them than mitt romney at 32%. how does he overcome that? >> i think wednesday night hit the restart button. they are ready to go. about a month to talk about his plan and i think what you saw on wednesday night, it wasn't the 30 second spots being defined by barack obama. it was mitt romney speaking unfiltered to voters for 90 seconds. he was in their living room. they liked what they heard. >> jamal, shoot tragt with m
